MAJOR WEBSITES
AND REQUIRED READING:
TOYNBEE.NET
(A classic site by Philadelphia's William O'Neill, this site stood
as the definitive Toynbee Tile site for years. Though it still provides
a wealth of information, it has fallen out of date and includes some
speculation that now seems irrelevant. Nonetheless, it is still a staggering
overview of the Tiles' span.)
PLACAS
TOYNBEE: THE BRAZILIAN SITE (A site predominantly in
Portuguese, this site is notable mainly for its enthusiasm and solid
photo section.)
DOVATE.COM
(Currently in the 'news' section of this page is the most up-to-date
information available on the Tile subject, being Steve Weinik's article
on his detective work and theories, much of which correlates to that
of the Resurrect Dead crew.)
WIKIPEDIA'S TOYNBEE TILES PAGE (The Wikipedia has an impressive
catalog of Tile information.)
| GROUPS AND
ARTISTS' WRITINGS ON THE TILES: |
 |
CRIMETHINC
(Formed in the mid-late '90s, Crimethinc is a radical, politicized
arts group whose philosophy proclaims self-liberation through extreme
cultural subversion. Their most recent book,
Recipes for Disaster: An Anarchist Cookbook, gives a highly
detailed account of the physical makeup of the Tiles and encourages
readers to make their own tiles and, ultimately, create a whole
new art movement. The Crimethinc article is not available on the
internet; thus, Toynbee fans are highly encouraged to track down
the book.) |
| GEOCACHING
(An internet-based "entertaining adventure game" that resembles
a scavenger hunt, the Geocachers set up a search for Toynbee Tiles
that requires the player to attune their computer to the coordinates
of a given Tile to receive points. Quite cool.) |
REPRINTS OF PIECES RELATED
TO THE MYSTERY:
THEORIES:
WANNA RUN THAT ONE BY ME AGAIN? (A
Short article about James Morasco and the Minority Association that
appeared in Clark Deleon's Philadelphia Inquirer column, 1983.)
FOUR A.M.(A
Short play by David Mamet published in 1983 in which a caller to a late
night radio talkshow describes his fledgling organization dedicated
to repopulating Jupiter with the dead of Earth. Coincidence?)
TOYNBEE TILE ESSAY(Justin's
article circa 2004 - A great primer on the Tiles.)
PRINTED ARTICLES
ABOUT THE TILES:
BALTIMORE
SUN (1994, the Tiago Teixeira reprint. Notable for its zeal.)
NEW
YORK TIMES (April 25th, 1999. Poorly investigated and NYC-centric.)
CINCINNATI
CITY-BEAT (Aug. 2, 2001. Well researched, a good intro to the
Tiles.)
COLUMBUS
ALIVE (Aug. 9th, 2001. Very similar to the Cincinnati article.)
KANSAS
CITY STAR (Sept 6th, 2003.
Unknown News' reprint of the classic Kansas City Star article, a
favorite. The analysis of the Tileist's pyschology is choice.)
INDIANAPOLIS
STAR (Jan 2nd, 2006.)
WKYC
CLEVELAND (Sep 9th, 2003 unimpressive blurb)
THE
LOQUITUR, CABRINI COLLEGE (Oct 2nd, 2003. Article in a college
paper.)
PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER (Sep 12, 2003. A decent
intro.)
PHILADELPHIA
WEEKLY (Oct 15th, 2003. Brief blurb in free Philly periodical.)
MISCELLANEOUS:
ABSOLUTE
ASTRONOMY (Encyclopedia entry that mirrors Wikipedia page.)
GEOCITIES-BASED
TILES MESSAGE BOARD (Out of date.)
UWA'S
PELICAN (An interesting article on guerilla art that
mentions the Tiles.)
FLICKR
PHOTO GALLERY (A newer page chronicaling sightings, so far mainly
constituted by the 'new school' Tiles. The style of these Tiles and
more outlandish paranoid blurbs leads many Tile enthusiasts to believe
there is a copycat at work.)

or revelations. They are included mainly for the sake of completism.
